Bromelain, from pineapples, and papain, from papayas, are best known as digestive aids. Papain and bromelain selectively digest tissue that is dead and they do not effect the surrounding tissue. Live cells have a sufficient amounts of enzyme inhibitors to protect them from digestion. Both of these enzymes are in a category called proteolytic enzymes. This type of enzyme has been shown to be beneficial in the recovery from sports injuries, respiratory diseases, viral diseases, digestive disorders, certain cancers and degenerative diseases. The enzymes from the unripe fruit act to digest proteins by breaking them down into smaller absorbable components.
Bromelain enzymes have been shown to reduce and eliminate swelling and inflammation in joints and soft tissues affected by diseases, such as arthritis. Bromelain has also been used to reduce and eliminate allergic responses in combination with certain bioflavinoids with great success.
Papain, aside from it’s digestive capabilities, has been shown to have antihemolytic properties (reduce and/or stop bleeding). This action accounts for papain’s use as an anti-ulcer agent. Papaya is used in many places world wide for this purpose.
Potease enzymes in pineapple and papaya have been shown to stimulate certain immune cells and also aid in the destruction of deformed and/or scarred soft tissue that becomes hard non-elastic. Cross linking (deformed tissue) occurs as a result of physical injury and chemical damage (free radicals), to name a few. These deformed cells can cause aging and other pathologies, including cancer.
